Occupational Therapy

Empowering Independence & Function

At Global Rehab & Wellness Inc., our Occupational Therapy (OT) program is dedicated to helping you regain the ability to perform the daily tasks that matter most. Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or navigating cognitive changes, our goal is to help you live life to the fullest.

At our clinic we offer:

1. Comprehensive Assessment & Functional Diagnosis

We begin with an in-depth clinical evaluation of your physical, cognitive, and environmental needs. We don’t just look at the injury; we look at how it impacts your ability to work, care for yourself, and engage in your hobbies. This assessment forms the foundation of your recovery.

2. Targeted Treatment Plan

We reject the one-size-fits-all model. Your Targeted Treatment Plan is custom-built to address your specific barriers. We select from a variety of evidence-based modalities, including:

  • Fine Motor Retraining: Improving dexterity for tasks like writing or typing.
  • Ergonomic Modifications: Optimizing your workspace or home to prevent strain.
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation: Strategies to improve memory, focus, and executive function.
  • Adaptive Equipment Training: Learning to use tools that make daily life easier.

3. The Treatment Session: Precision & Purpose

Our sessions focus on functional precision. Depending on your goals, we utilize:

  • Therapeutic Activities: Simulating real-world tasks to build strength and coordination.
  • Sensory Integration: Techniques to help the brain process information more effectively.
  • Splinting & Bracing: Custom solutions to support joints and improve hand function.
  • Mental Health Support: Addressing the emotional and psychological barriers to independence.

4. Integrated Rehabilitation

At Global Rehab, we treat the body and mind as a whole. Your Occupational Therapy is seamlessly integrated with our other services, such as Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy. This collaborative approach ensures that your physical gains are translated into real-world independence and long-term success.

ADP & Wheelchair Mobility Assessments

Our Professional Assessment Process

1. Clinical Mobility Assessment

Our process begins with a comprehensive physical and functional evaluation. We analyze:

  • Postural Support Needs: Assessing spinal alignment and skin integrity to prevent pressure sores.
  • Functional Goals: Determining where the equipment will be used (e.g., home, work, outdoors).
  • Physical Capabilities: Evaluating strength, range of motion, and endurance.

2. Equipment Selection & Trial

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Based on your assessment, we coordinate with reputable equipment vendors to provide:

  • Manual Wheelchairs: Custom-fit frames and seating.
  • Power Wheelchairs: Advanced controls for those with limited upper-body strength.
  • Seating & Positioning: Custom cushions, backrests, and pressure-relieving accessories.
  • Trial Period: We facilitate equipment trials to ensure the device meets your needs in your real-world environment.

3. ADP Application & Documentation

Navigating government paperwork can be overwhelming. As Registered ADP Authorizers, our therapists handle the clinical documentation required to secure your funding. We ensure all forms are completed accurately to maximize your chances of approval.

4. Integrated Fitting & Training

Once your equipment arrives, we provide a final fitting and training session. We ensure the device is perfectly calibrated to your body and teach you—and your caregivers—how to use the equipment safely and effectively to prevent future injuries.

Why Choose Global Rehab for Your ADP Assessment?

  • Expert Authorizers: Our OTs are highly trained in the latest mobility technology and ADP regulations. She is a highly experienced therapist for ADP serving in Brampton and all over the GTA.
  • Pressure Management Specialists: We prioritize skin protection and postural alignment to enhance long-term health.
  • Patient-First Advocacy: We work as your advocate, ensuring you receive the highest level of funding and the most appropriate technology.
  • Collaborative Care: We integrate your mobility plan with our broader rehabilitation services to ensure your equipment supports your physical therapy goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy?

While both are essential to rehabilitation, the goals differ. Physical Therapy focuses on physical movement and gross motor skills. Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses on Functional Independence—the ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, and driving. Our Registered Occupational Therapists bridge the gap between physical recovery and returning to your normal daily routine.

2. Is Occupational Therapy at Global Rehab covered by insurance?

Yes. Most Extended Health Care (EHC) plans in Ontario provide coverage for Occupational Therapy. We also specialize in Direct Billing for Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) claims and WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) cases. If you are looking for a rehab clinic that handles the paperwork for your workplace injury or car accident claim, Global Rehab is here to help.

3. Do I need a doctor’s referral for an OT assessment in Ontario?

In Ontario, you have direct access to a Registered Occupational Therapist (OT Reg. (Ont.)), meaning a physician’s referral is not legally required. However, for insurance reimbursement or specific ADP (Assistive Devices Program) funding, some providers may request a note from your family doctor. We recommend checking your specific policy before your initial functional assessment.

4. Can an Occupational Therapist help with Concussions and Brain Injuries?

Absolutely. At Global Rehab, we provide specialized Cognitive Rehabilitation for Post-Concussion Syndrome and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). Our therapists focus on executive functioning, memory strategies, and sensory processing to help you return to work or school safely without symptom flare-ups.

5. What is an ADP Wheelchair Assessment?

The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) is an Ontario Ministry of Health initiative. As Registered ADP Authorizers, our OTs conduct seating and mobility assessments to determine your need for a walker, manual wheelchair, or power wheelchair. We help you access government funding that typically covers 75% of the equipment cost.

6. How does OT help with "Return to Work" after a workplace injury?

Our Work Hardening and Ergonomic Assessments are designed to facilitate a safe return to employment. We analyze your job demands and provide Workplace Modifications and Adaptive Equipment recommendations. This ensures you can perform your duties efficiently while preventing repetitive strain injuries or re-injury.

7. Does Global Rehab offer specialized Hand Therapy?

Yes. We treat various upper extremity conditions including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, arthritis, and post-surgical repairs. Our treatments include custom splinting, fine motor retraining, and targeted exercises to restore grip strength and dexterity.
